CRISIS READY & MEDIA SAVVY

Crisis communications often begins and ends with the CEO, the public face of the company. And sometimes, especially in high stakes situations, smart people can be caught off-guard and say the “wrong" things. When the then CEO of BP, Tony Hayward described the colossal oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico as “relatively tiny”, he added fuel to an already raging fire of public outcry against his company.

In today’s world where bad news can travel around the globe in mere minutes, companies cannot afford not to be crisis ready. You would never dream of running a marathon or a grueling iron-man triathlon without any proper training. The same applies to managing any protracted crisis which threatens a company’s reputation and survival.   To be crisis-ready means building up your crisis communications infrastructure and muscles, way ahead of the race. Otherwise you could run the risk of making a bad situation, worse, as was the case with BP. Should a crisis happen, what would it take for your company to swing into action fast?
